PSYCHOSYNTHESIS COUNSELLING

TARIK DERVISH

I am a qualified transpersonal counsellor trained at the Psychosynthesis Trust in London. I specialise in working with the LGBTQ+ community and those living with chronic health conditions. I have experience of working with depression, anxiety and loss of purpose and meaning as well as the sense of overwhelm and despair that life’s challenges sometimes bring. I have worked specifically as a counsellor for two years but in my broader roles I have been working with people for over 30 years. I am also an experienced natural health practitioner, astrologer and yoga teacher. If you are looking to work with someone who has a broader spiritual perspective on life, then I might be right for you.

No matter how much yoga we do, how many herbs we take, how much we exercise or change our diet and lifestyle, we may still find ourselves in dark places. What is designed to heal our bodies may not be the right tool for healing our minds and hearts. According to psychosynthesis, these dark places often arise from a loss of connection with our authentic nature.

When we enter the world, we are unique souls who need to be loved, seen, and cared for unconditionally. Regardless of how good our upbringing is,  many of us grow up feeling unseen and unheard and ultimately end up losing sight of who we really are.  We have had to learn how to adapt ourselves in order to gain approval from our caregivers and often continue to act inauthentically into adulthood simply because we have forgotten and are still clinging to a version of ourselves that has outlived its usefulness.

By burying parts of being, we set ourselves up for unhappiness, because our soul longs to be expressed. We feel shame when our needs are rejected because we are taught that some of those needs are unacceptable. Rather than face the painful prospect of embracing those lost parts of ourselves, we try to numb our discomfort through harmful behaviour that stems from depression and anxiety.

We may try to soothe our pain with food, drugs, sex, and other distractions, but these are only temporary solutions—the pain will return until we face it head-on and allow it to move through us. This is the right time to embark on the courageous journey of therapy.

Psychosynthesis is the process of synthesising and re- integrating those lost parts of ourselves—not only the painful facets of our past, but also the potential of who we could become.

As a second generation migrant of Cypriot heritage, I grew up with profound feelings of shame not just around my heritage but also my sexuality and spirituality. I spent many years working on these feelings behind the scenes with many therapists before training in psychotherapeutic counselling. I chose Psychosynthesis because it embraces the idea of the soul that carries the shadows of our past as well as the possibilities of who we could be.

Why choose to work with me?

I have practised yoga and meditation for over 40 years, Astrology as a psycho-spiritual tool for 35 years and traditional systems of healing like Ayurveda and Chinese medicine for over 25 years. I have also spend long periods of soul searching in ashrams (monastic yoga community) in India. I now include Psychosynthesis in my work after three and a half years of rigorous training,

I continue to work holistically when working with clients as I believe that mind, feelings and body all work together. Therapy is rarely a quick fix. The key to lasting change is establishing a strong therapeutic relationship and to work co-creatively towards agreed goals.

Timing is important. There must be opportunity and a willingness to do the work if you really want to change. Your soul nature will send out distress signals when the time is right. Is this the right time for you?

If any of the above resonates with you, please get in touch. I offer a free 20-minute consultation so we can decide together whether we’d like to work together. If we proceed, I ask for a commitment of 6–8 sessions to focus on a specific issue you are struggling with. After that, we can decide whether to continue or conclude our work. Currently, I work In person at the Helios Centre in Holborn London (from January 2026),  online via Zoom and in person at my home clinic in central Brighton. I charge £60-75 for a 50-minute session but offer concessionary rates to low earners and unemployed.

I am a member of the BACP and fully insured.
