I am excited to announce that my book Ayurveda in Yoga Teaching is finally out
The book is a distillation of 20 years of teaching yoga with an ayurvedic approach and is packed with tips and information about everything a yoga teacher needs to know about Ayurveda from a yogic perspective.
Ayurveda means knowledge of life and the ayurvedic approach revolves around the idea that we all have a unique constitution or Prakriti and the more we honour and celebrate that uniqueness, the happier and healthier we will be. Our Ayurvedic prakrti and is what we were designed to be. Understanding our prakrti can help us navigate our way through life more skillfully and help us with all aspects of our lives including our yoga. It also helps us assess the prakrti of others which can help us become better yoga teachers.
Ayurveda is built on a pre-scientific model of life that is rich with symbolism. It draws upon the concept of the five elements- earth water fire air and space, and how they join forces to bring about life. When they work together, they create the doshas which are- vata, pitta and kapha which fulfil all the functions of the body. Ayurveda is a kind of language that explains why we do what we do and teaches us how to do what is right for us. It treats us with compassion and even shows us what to do when things go out of balance.
A key concept that the book explores is Agni- the metabolic or digestive fire. Agni symbolises that light within us, our solar nature that drives the batteries of our cells. Ayurveda maintains that everything starts in the gut and right diet makes for a longer healthier life but we can also use yoga practices to help us maintain a strong agni as well and this book explores how.
Asana or posture work is a staple for most yoga practitioners, so this book explores how to practice asana from an ayurvedic perspective with helpful sequences and ways of working in postures.
Since I started learning about marma or pressure points during my clinical training in India, I have incorporated them into my daily practice and teaching. In this book , I will share my tried and tested experience with you by explaining some of the most useful points to use them in your practice and teaching.
As a yoga teacher, I am always looking for novel ways of teaching with concrete examples. In this book, I have made sure that the real nuts of bolts of teaching have been included. Yes, ive done all the hard work for you. There is a ready made course plan for teaching yoga with an ayurvedic approach and lots of lesson planning ideas as well! There are enough ideas in this book for you to teach for a whole year!
You will get ideas about how to teach relaxations from an ayurvedic perspective and for those of you who are trained in yoga nidra, there are lots of tips on how to use ayurvedic symbolism in your classes too.
I have included some simple ways of using mantra too.
You know, this is just the kind of book I would have wanted when I first started teaching and developing an interest in Ayurveda so here it is!
You can buy it today for yourself and of course it would make a great present for your yoga teacher friends too!
